About the Artist

RICHELLE RUSSELL

I am a painter who works in my home studio in Lincoln, Rhode Island.  My artwork often has farm animals and outdoor landscapes, reflecting a lifelong bond with animals and a deep appreciation for the natural world.  When I'm not painting, I am in my garden with its native plants and animals.
As a child, I spent countless hours outdoors, exploring the neighboring farm and nearby open spaces.  Our home nurtured creativity.  In college, I had the privilege to study with a master Tibetan Buddhist painter in Nepal.  This deepened my lifelong connections to art, philosophy and religion.
The rich colors of pastels are appealing.  I start with a local photograph and sketch out the 'bones' of the composition--strong shapes that bring balance and interest.  Then I choose a few complementary colors with an emphasis on energy and vibrancy.
Creating art is both a joy and a calling.  The focus, humility, and moments of insight that I draw upon as a minister are also in my creative process.  Whether I'm painting cows in a field, chickens grazing, or a tree on a hill, I have a sense of reverence.  Making art becomes a spiritual practice--one that I consider both a blessing and an honor.
My paintings offer beauty, respect, and a touch of humor.  They are made to be seen, shared, and enjoyed.
